Case Story of Alganesh Demsie

Alganesh was born in Tuni Gesses kebele, Debati Woreda and has 2 sisters and 5 brothers. She learned from grade 1 to 4 in Tuni Gesses primary school, from grade 5-8 grade in Debati secondary school, from grade 9 -10 in Gigel Beles secondary school. Even if she completed 10th grade, she could not continue preparatory school because of her low score in Grade 10 national exam. Her parents were very poor they couldn’t support her to join Privet College. Due to her interest to pursue College education, she applied for free education opportunity facilitated by Metekel zone Education desk by stating her parents’ poor economic condition. Following this, she got free college education chance at MA College to join Secretary and Office administration department and started her college education. However; after completing her first year college education, she could not continue her second year education because of ethnic conflict in the Metekel zone. As a result, she was forced to stop and return to her family.

While she was living with her family, her elder brother planned to exchange her with another girl for the purpose of cultural exchange marriage without her consent. She refused the cultural exchange marriage when she was aware of it. But her brother forced her to marry a man with cultural exchange marriage arrangement. Following this, she reported the case to woreda women and children affairs office and the Woreda Women and Children affairs office in cooperation with relevant bodies investigated her GBV case and she was brought to MujejeguwaLoka Women Development Association’s shelter where she got full psychological services. Currently, she is attending her second year college education and leading happy life with other GBV survivors.
